Mr. Wade "Doc" Columbus Frye, age 84, of Mt. Airy, NC widower of Mrs. Margaret "Erlene" Brinkley Frye passed away Sunday morning, April 14, 2013 at Ridgecrest Retirement and Assisted Living Community. He was born April 9, 1929 in Surry County to the late John Alexander and Vena Moser Frye. At the age of eight, Wade received a "Little Doctor's Medical Bag" and charmed the community of Highland Park with his special skills in diagnosing illnesses cured with candy pills. Thus, he acquired the nickname of "Doc" which followed him throughout his life. Mr. Frye served honorably in the US Army during the Korean War from 1950-1952. He was retired from BB&T-Blue Ridge Burke Insurance Services. As a member of Highland Park Baptist Church, he served as a Deacon and taught Sunday school for 58 years. Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Janice (Jan) Frye Hill, of Mount Airy and Phyllis Frye James and husband, Stuart of Raleigh, and a granddaughter, Elizabeth King of Lexington, NC along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mr. Frye was cherished by many, including his "southern daughter", Grizelle Fearing of Manteo, NC and his "northern son and daughter", Mr. and Mrs. Denis Pancoast of Allentown, PA. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Frye was preceded in death by one brother, Wayne Frye, and his son-in-law, James C. Hill, Jr. A memorial service will be held at 3 PM on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Highland Park Baptist Church with Dr. Darrell Tate officiating. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.
