Mr. Walter Clarence Payne

Mr. Walter Clarence Payne, age 73 of Ferrum, passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart. He was born in Danville on May 16, 1938 to the late Worth Clarence and Martha Junia Cain Payne. In addition to his parents, Mr. Payne was preceded in death by two brothers, William Lon Payne and Kenneth Augusta Payne; and a special uncle, Benjamin Lee Cain. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church in Suffolk, served in the United States Navy for 10 years, had been the owner/operator of Deer Run Campground for 23 years and was a member of the VFW in Hillsville.
Mr. Payne is survived by his wife of 54 years, Julie V. Carroll Payne of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Walter Lee, Sr. and Alice H. Payne of Suffolk, Timothy Scott and Renea S. Payne of Woolwine; one daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia Lynn and Barry Lynn Gay of Suffolk; five grandchildren, Barry Lynn Gay, Jr., Jamie Leigh Payne, Walter Lee Payne, Jr., Austin Scott Payne and Laura Ashley Payne; one great-granddaughter, Kearstin McKenna Gay; and two brothers, Ervin Wayne Payne of Slidell, Louisiana and Archie Edward Payne of Danville.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 6, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Entombment will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. at Meadow Brook Memorial Gardens, 4569 Shoulders Hill Road, Suffolk, Virginia 23435 with Rev. Ronnie Wiggins officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Smith River Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 122, Woolwine, Virginia 24185. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.moodyfuneralservices.com.
