Mr. Walter Lee Slate, age 84 of Ararat, passed away Monday, January 11, 2016 at the Landmark Center in Stuart. He was born in Coalwood, West Virginia on February 27, 1931 to the late Hugh and Margaret Ferguson Slate. In addition to his parents, Mr. Slate was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Pennington. He had retired from the United States Navy with 20 years of service. He loved square dancing and flat footing.
Mr. Slate is survived by his wife, Alpha J. Clement Slate of the home; two step-daughters, Linda Agee and husband, Darrell of Ararat, Patricia Draughn and husband, Mark of Mount Airy, North Carolina; a step-son, Darrell Rorrer of Ararat; four step-grandsons; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Anna Belle and Roy Sellers of Bahama, North Carolina, Mary Helen and Donald Kennedy of Midlothian; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Rev. Monte Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow in Hillsgrove Baptist Church Cemetery with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times at the home.
