Mr. Warren Gameleal Simmons

Mr. Warren G. Simmons, 95 of Mt. Airy, passed away late Friday evening at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Simmons was born on April 3, 1921 in Surry County to the late Wilcher F. and Mattie Lou Simmons. He was a veteran of World War II, a retired Hospice worker, a member of First Baptist Church and a member of Renfro Masonic Lodge 691 of Mt. Airy. Mr. Simmons is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Stephannie and Michael Dees of Galax, VA; a step-grandson, Mike Dees of Fayetteville, NC; a granddaughter, spouse and great-granddaughter, Katie, Chris and Sophia Turner of Wilmington, NC; a sister, Esther Gearhart of New Port News, VA ; a daughter-in-law and spouse, Teena and Scot Strader of McLeansville, NC; and multiple nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Simmons was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Hazel Tickle Simmons; his son, Rodney W. Simmons; a grandson, W.K Dees; and nine brothers and three sisters. A graveside service will be held Wednesday July 6, 2016 at 10:00 AM at Oakdale Cemetery. The service will be conducted by close family friend, Mrs. Alison Bolen of Galax. No formal visitation will be held at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Galax Foundation for Excellence in Education, The W.K. Dees Memorial Scholarship, PO Box 487, Galax, VA 24333 or to the Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Rd., Dobson NC 27017. Moody Funeral Services in Mt. Airy is serving the Simmons family.
