Mr. Wilbur Richard Helms

Mr. Wilbur Richard Helms, age 82 of Meadows of Dan, passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at the V.A. Medical Center in Salem. He was born in Floyd County on January 27, 1929 to the late Abraham and Eula Hancock Helms. In addition to his parents, Mr. Helms was preceded in death by one brother, Charlie Helms. After a 22 year military career, he retired as a highly decorated Tech. Sargeant from the United States Air Force. He had served his country during the Korean and Vietnam wars. After retirement, he enjoyed life as a farmer.
Mr. Helms is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Yvonne Helms and Mark Lavinder of Roanoke and Sharon Helms and Jim Richter of Indianapolis, Indiana; one son, Michael Ray Helms of Meadows of Dan; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Bill Helms of Laurel Fork; and a beloved friend, Mildred Hylton of Willis.
Funeral services for Mr. Helms will be held Friday, March 11, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at Mountain View United Methodist Church with Brother Mike Varner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
