Mr. William Curtis Carter

Mr. William Curtis Carter, age 88 of Stuart, passed away Friday, November 30, 2007 at his home. He was born in Patrick County on February 27, 1919 to the late J. T. and Callie Spencer Carter. In addition to his parents, Mr. Carter was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother. He had served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II, and was a member of Stuart United Methodist Church where he was Chairman of the Administrative Board for many years. He also taught Sunday School for over 30 years. He was a member of Stuart Rotary Club with 53 years of perfect attendance, serving as president, secretary and Assistant District Governor. He served on the Board of Directors for the Patrick County Historical Society, on the School Board as Chairman, was a member of the Regional Library Board, and had been a leader for Boy Scout Troop 65 for several years. He graduated from Stuart High School at age 16, attended Wake Forest College and graduated from the University of Richmond in 1949. He had assisted his father in running The Depot in Stuart while the Dick and Willie Railroad was in operation; and had worked for Hudson's Drug Store, T. Culeman Andrews Accounting Firm and Virginia Electric Power. He then became an assistant to Mr. V. R. Williams with Stuart Lumber Company, and retired from International Paper.
Mr. Carter is survived by his wife of 53 years, Phyllis Moore Carter of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Amy Carter Francis and Jimmy of Stuart, Nancy and Dave Milby of Hartfield; one son, William Curtis Carter, Jr. and Carolyn Pack of Stuart; three grandchildren, Gabriel Health, Parker Heath and Heather Bowman; two sisters, Callie Ruth Price of Stuart and Marjorie Raper of Pleasant Garden, North Carolina and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Carter will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Stuart United Methodist Church with Rev. Tommy Shepherd, Elwood Pack and Fred Gilley officiating. Burial will follow in Stuart Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart, and at other times at the home.
