Mr. William Herbert "Herb" Fanning, Jr. age 77 of Stuart, passed away Thursday, February 3, 2011 in Roanoke. He was born in Roanoke on September 4, 1933 to the late William Herbert Fanning and Cecil Morehead Fanning. In addition to his parents, Mr. Fanning was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Fanning, and a sister, Jean Fanning. He had served in the United States Army, and had graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He had retired in 1992 from Radford Army Ammunition Plant where he had been a mechanical engineer for 34 years.
Mr. Fanning was very active in the Lord's work. He had served as a deacon and taught Sunday School for many years at Cambria Baptist Church of Christiansburg and Stuart Baptist Church. Recently he had been active in promoting the ongoing Patrick County Waterwheel Revival.
Mr. Fanning was a former member of the Kiwanis Club in Christiansburg where he had served as president. He had also been a former member of the Lions Club in Stuart where he also served as president.
Mr. Fanning is survived by his wife of 50 years, Shirley Hubbard Fanning of the home; two sons and a daughter-in law, Rodney Dean and Dana Fanning of Moneta and Todd Kevin Fanning of Roanoke; two grandsons, Tyler Kevin Fanning and Haden Laine Fanning; four brothers, Carl Fanning of Virginia, David Fanning of Arkansas, Ronald Fanning of Virginia and Jim Fanning of Tennessee; and a sister, Linda Nelson of South Carolina.
Funeral services for Mr. Fanning will be held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Rev. J. R. Vipperman and Rev. Joyce Green officiating. Special music will be provided by Rev. Burgie Penn and The House of Prayer Praise and Worship Trio. Burial will follow in Jack's Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:30 p.m. until time of the service at the funeral home.
