Mr. William Cabell (Bill) Staples, Jr., age 85 of Stuart passed away Monday, November 5, 2007 at the R. J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital. He was born on May 19, 1922 in Lynchburg to the late William Cabell and Lucy Clark Staples. In addition to his parents, Mr. Staples was preceded in death by two sisters, Ethel Kimball and Mary Elizabeth Sinclair, and his first wife, Foster Warren Staples. Mr. Staples was a graduate of Stuart High School, and was a member of the Old Guard class of 1944 at VPI&SU and attended Purdue University. He was an avid fan of Virginia Tech sports and a longtime member of the Hokie Club, the Stuart Rotary Club, Patrick County Historical Society, Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard, Patrick Springs VFW Post 7800, and the Mountain Home Lodge #263. He was a Trustee of Stuart Cemetery, worked for many years with Boy Scout Troop 65, and was a member of the Stuart United Methodist Church. During World War II, Mr. Staples served in the United States Army Air Corp. in the European Theatre and was called back into the service during the Korean War. He was associated with Jefferson Pilot, now Lincoln National, as an insurance agent and financial counselor for more than 50 years.
Mr. Staples is survived by his wife of 31 years, Barbara Lash Staples of the home; a son, William Cabell Staples, III of Seneca, South Carolina; two step-daughters, Debra L. Flax and husband, Marshall of Port St. Lucie, Florida, and Anne C. Straub, and husband, Steve of Centreville; and three step-grandchildren, Alexandra, Jacob and Max Straub of Centreville; two sisters, Lucy McLaughlin of Ann Arbor, Michigan and Lee Lambert of Stuart.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, November 8, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Dr. Rev. Clint Hopkins and Rev. Tommy Shepherd officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard, and Masonic rites will be conducted by Mountain Home Lodge #263. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Patrick County Historical Society, P.O. Box 1045, Stuart, Virginia 24171, or to the Bookmobile Fund, c/o Patrick County Library, P.O. Box 787, Stuart, Virginia 24171. Moody Funeral Home in Stuart is in charge of the arrangements.
