Mr. Willis "Ras" Clyde Slate, age 65, of Claudville, Virginia, passed away on Friday, March 18, 2011 at his home. He was born in Patrick County, Virginia on November 28, 1945 to the late Lemly and Sallie Slate. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon Lynn Slate; a sister, Margie Slate Moorefield; and a brother, Timothy Allen Slate. Family members, friends and neighbors remember him for his giving, kind-hearted, and unique sense of humor. He will be most remembered for the love of his children and grandchildren. He dedicated most of his later years as a caregiver for his sister and brother when they were ill and to quietly looking after others. He had a love for gardening, often sharing the fruits and vegetables of his labors with friends and neighbors. A man of many trades, he held a variety of jobs, including trucking and farming.
Surviving are his son, Sean Willis Slate and wife, Pepi Slate of San Marcos, California; a daughter, Sybil Slate and husband, Jon Alipanah of Austin, Texas; four grandchildren, Sebrina, Samuel, Celina, and Windy Slate; and many family and friends who loved him.
A funeral service for Mr. Slate will be held Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. A private burial will be held Friday at Red Bank Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Claudville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Willis Slate Memorial Fund, c/o Moody Funeral Home, P.O. Box 307, Stuart, Virginia 24171.
