Mr. Winfred Marvin "Wimpy" Griffith, age 84 of Ridgeway, passed away Monday morning, November 5, 2007 at the Golden Living Center in Martinsville. Mr. Griffith was born in Woolwine on July 26, 1923 to the late William Frank and Lena May Roberson Griffith. In addition to his parents, Mr. Griffith was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; step-daughter, Rebecca Mae Puckett; seven brothers, Ithmer "Pappy", Earl, Caris, Carl, Landis, Calvin and Charlie Griffith; three sisters, Viva Turner, Bernadine Byrd and Vilrie Griffith; and special friend, Maggie Kendrick.
Mr. Griffith was an outstanding millwright and grade hardwood sawyer for over 50 years and worked for sawmills in Virginia, North Carolina and Maryland. He taught many young sawyers how to saw and maintain a sawmill and could listen to the machinery and saw sounds to detect if there was a problem and then fix it.
Mr. Griffith is survived by four brothers, Merton Griffith and Bethel Griffith, both of Eden, North Carolina, Enos Griffith of Cave Springs, Frank Griffith, Jr. of Floyd; five sisters, Beatrice Moran, Elonzia Griffith, Martha Griffith, Julia Scott and Shirley Martin, all of Woolwine; his step-granddaughter, Sabrena Darlene Cardwell, and step-grandson, Jimmy L. Puckett, all of Eden; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, November 7, at 2:00 p.m. at the Griffith Family Cemetery in Charity. The family will receive friends one half hour prior to the graveside service at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the W.M.
