Mrs. Alice Martha Wright, age 97 of Patrick Springs, departed to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 10, 2008 at Stanleytown Health Care Center. She was born on January 6, 1911 in the Buffalo Ridge section of Patrick County to the late Thomas Green and Mattie Richardson Wright. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Wright was preceded in death by her husband, James Diery Wright; a daughter, Peggy Ann Stone; five brothers, John, Pierce, Richard, Sherman and James Wright; and three sisters, Pearlie Wright, Emma Richardson and an infant sister.
For many years, Mrs. Wright was a very active member of Goodwill Baptist Church, serving as Choir leader and a Sunday School teacher. In later years, she was a member of County Line Church of God of Prophecy. She attended Wilson Mission School in the Pole Bridge section of Patrick County and graduated from Ferrum Training School in 1929. She taught in several schools in Patrick County, and last taught at the 2 room Via School from 1946 - 1950. Her sales career included World Book Encyclopedia, Stanley Products and Leggett's Department Store. She retired from Bassett Walker Corporation. She was active in the Patrick County Retired Teachers Association, Patrick Henry Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Patrick County Senior Citizens and was a volunteer at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital. During Governor Holden's tenure, she served as County Representative for the Silver Hair Advisory Committee.
Mrs. Wright is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, James D. and Shirley Faye Wright of Ruffin, North Carolina; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marie and Bobby Lawrence of Spencer and Virginia and David Arthur of Kenbridge, Virginia and son-in-law, Lloyd Stone of Wake Forest, North Carolina; five grandsons, David Wright of Reidsville, North Carolina, Brent Stone of Chandler, Arizona, John and Tammi Wade of Toccoa, Georgia, Kevin and Allison Stone of Easley, South Carolina and Will Arthur of Kenbridge; two granddaughters, Christy and John Lambright of Wake Forest and Sherri and Josh Kirk of Redisville; four great-grandsons, Watson Lambright, Logan Kirk, Nicholas Kirk and Jack Stone; a brother and sister-in-law, Rev. P.J. and Irene Wright of Rocky Mount; a special niece and caregiver, Mary Frances Jordan of Hillsborough, North Carolina, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mrs. Wright will be held Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Rev. Freddie Bonds and Rev. Wayne Hannah officiating. Burial will follow in the Wright Family Cemetery on Pole Bridge Road. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart, and at other times at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Bobby Lawrence of 1036 Log Manor Road, Spencer, Virginia.
