Mrs. Anne Bennett Stiff, age 83 of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, and formerly of Martinsville, Virginia and Birmingham, Alabama, passed away Sunday, February 15, 2009 at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart, Virginia. She was born in Rocky Mount, Virginia to the late Benjamin Alphonso and Mayme Morris Bennett. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Stiff was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Graves Stiff, Jr. She was a graduate of Radford College, was a member of Christ Episcopal Church of Martinsville, and was a highly respected educator with Martinsville City schools.
Mrs. Stiff is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Luther G. Stiff, III and Patricia Clotfelter of Birmingham, Alabama; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sue S. and Jim Horney of High Point, North Carolina, Sally S. and Ellis Lawson of Stuart, Virginia, and Sarah S. and Rick Shultz of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; six grandchildren, Miss Coleene Stiff of Paris, France, Miss Laurel Stiff of Birmingham, Alabama, Mrs. Logan Martin and husband Corey of Charlotte, North Carolina, Jim Horney III and wife Sheila of Durham, North Carolina, Joseph Lawson of Stuart, Virginia, and Zachary Schultz of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; one brother, Gordon Bennett of Roanoke, Virginia; and one sister, Gwen Leake of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
A graveside memorial service for Mrs. Stiff will be held Thursday, February 19, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Cemetery in Conway, South Carolina with Rev. Laurie McAlpine officiating. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation, 2728 Colonial Ave., Suite 2, Roanoke, Virginia 24015.
