Mrs. Audrey Shelton Slate, 92, of 922 Spring Street, Mount Airy, died Sunday, April 14, 2013, at her home. At the time of her passing, she was surrounded by her four children, Joan, Nancy, Sam, Patsy and family friend, Teresa Chilton. Born December 19, 1920, in Nettle Ridge, a small community in Patrick County, Virginia, she was the youngest daughter of Nannie Fulcher Shelton and Samuel Bass Shelton. She was the second youngest in a family of 10. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years and love of her life, Burnie Ray Slate; four sisters, Cassie, Doris, Mabel and Rachel and five brothers, Orion, Hughes, Wayne, Edward and Robert.
She is survived by her children, Joan Williams of Mount Airy, Nancy Slate Moore of Wrightsville Beach and husband, Jim, Sammy Ray Slate of Lewisville, and Patsy Slate Burke of Burlington and husband, Bill; her grandchildren, Christopher Layne Barber and wife, Susan, Keith Taylor Barber, Susan Brinkley Fox, Elizabeth Meade Burke, Leigh Burke Royce and husband, Jamie, John Lindley Williams and wife, Keyna, and Emily Slate Williams. She is also survived by her 12 great-grandchildren, William, Slate, Cooper, Carson, Lindley, Christopher, Berkley, Steele, Avery, Charlie, John and Emily and a sister-in-law, Geraldine Slate of Mount Airy. A successful businesswoman, she partnered with her daughter, Nancy, in establishing Personal Touch, which operated for 30 years in downtown Mount Airy. A longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Mount Airy, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. The family will receive visitors at Moody Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 16, from 6 p.m. to 8 pm. The funeral will be held Wednesday, April 17, at the the First Baptist Church of Mount Airy at 2 p.m. The Rev. Dr. Roger B. Gilbert will officiate. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
