Barbara Anne Clark Baughan, age 86, of Stuart, VA., returned to her Lord and Savior on February 25, 2017.
She was born in Mt. Airy, NC on September 12, 1930 in the old Memorial Hospital, to the late J. Myron and Annie Sue Fulton Clark.
She graduated from Stuart High School in 1948, graduated valedictorian from Stratford Junior College in Danville, VA and received a Bachelor’s of Arts in Education from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Following marriage to Charles Baughan in 1954, and the arrival of four children, she kept the household and performed volunteer work for RJR- Patrick County Memorial Hospital. Other volunteer work included serving as English teacher for the Swaziland weavers when they visited Patrick County. She worked as accountant for Clark Brothers Company from 1973 – 1978 and served as Instructional Assistant at Stuart Elementary School from 1978 – 1995.
In 1949 Barbara became a member of the Colonel Abram Penn Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, which was founded by her mother, Annie Sue Fulton Clark. During her 68 years of membership, Barbara held several offices including Regent and Registrar. She was instrumental in establishing the Patrick County Historical Society and Museum in Stuart, where she was a volunteer and provided research for genealogy requests. She contributed to the History of Patrick County, Virginia book published in 1999. Her contributions to the book included significant work on the sections covering Medical Services, the Courthouse, the Jail and Churches in the County. She co-authored several publications of Patrick County records and archive materials. Barbara was also a member of the Stuart Book Club for many years. She was a life-long Carolina Tar Heel basketball fan and avidly followed the team. Barbara was active with a number of charities and was a devout member of Stuart United Methodist Church. Barbara exemplified Christian values and Southern grace and she was deeply committed to family and community.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Charles Clifton Baughan. She is survived by her four children, Anne Criss and her husband, Jim of Graham, NC; Clark Baughan and his wife, Laura Rosenfeld, of Santa Fe, NM; Sarah Bowman of Ridgeway, VA; Mary Martin and her husband, Toby of Spencer, VA and her beloved grandchildren, Allen and Lisa Bowman, Meredith and Katherine Martin, and great-granddaughter Leah Vaughn. Barbara is also survived by her brother E. Fulton Clark of Stuart, VA.
The family wishes to acknowledge the love and support given by her long time caregiver, Brenda Shelton. Special thanks is also given to Linda Fain and Zoe Wagoner for their care and loving assistance..
The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart from 5:30-7:00 pm Monday, February 27, with the funeral service following at 7:00 pm. Burial will be on Tuesday, February 28 at 11:00 am at Fulton Farms Family Cemetery, on Rt. 58 in the Nettleridge area. Tommy Shepherd, pastor of Stuart United Methodist Church, will be officiating.
