Mrs. Bessie Virginia Clark Overby

Mrs. Bessie Virginia Clark Overby, age 96 of Stuart, passed away Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at Pioneer Community Hospital. She was born in Patrick County on May 5, 1920 to the late Jim and Una Martin Clark. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Overby was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Arthur Overby; a son, Willie “Bernice” Overby; a daughter, Frances Ann Overby; a grandson, Roger Dwayne Haden; three brothers, Reed, Junior and Frank Clark; a sister, Ida Newman; a son-in-law, Raymond Gilley; two daughters-in-law, Betty and Shirley Overby; and two brothers-in-law, Ernest Lawson and Clyde Isley. She had been a member of Minnie’s Chapel Wesleyan Church for over 60 years where she had been a Sunday school teacher. She was a hardworking farmer and homemaker, and was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandma, sister, aunt and friend.

Mrs. Overby is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby Overby of Stuart, David and Shirley Overby of Ferrum, Charles and Dorothy Overby of Stuart, Richard and Melinda Overby of Ridgeway; five daughters and sons-in-law, Eldean Gilley of Collinsville, Margaret and Monty Hodges of Rocky Mount; Doris O. and William Blackard of Woolwine, Alma Jean and Dennis Cockerham of Stuart, Nancy Overby Shelton of Stuart; 26 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Rose Lawson of Patrick Springs, Mae and Ralph Phillips of Patrick Springs, Mildred Isley of Collinsville; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Kaye Clark of Georgia; and a special friend, Kay’cee Glenn of Stuart.
Funeral services will be Friday, March 10, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Minnie’s Chapel Wesleyan Church with Pastor Gary Combs and Pastor John Hopkins officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.
