Mrs. Betty Southard Cook, 82, of Dobson, passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2014 at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home after a lengthy illness. She was born on February 15, 1931 in Elkin to Alvin Dixie and Myrtle Wall Southard. She was a long time member of Bessie's Chapel Baptist Church where she met and married her husband, Charles Cook. Betty was a bookkeeper for Winston Road in Jonesville in the 1950's and then went on to become a seamstress at Washington Mills in Dobson. She continued her work there after the company was sold to Tultex Corporation and worked there until it closed. Betty then became a cashier at Lowes Foods in Dobson and worked there until she became ill in 2009. She was affectionately known as "Little Miss Betty" by her co-workers and made many friends during her time there. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Dixie Atkins and husband Ron and Cynthia (Cindy) McCormick and husband John; grandchildren, Sarah Hutson and husband Dwayne and Cody McCormick and wife Melissa; great-grandchildren, Lane Montgomery Hutson and Charley Grace Hutson. She also has four step-grandchildren Steven and Shane Atkins and JD and Billy McCormick. Betty is also survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill Southard and wife Dolores and Donald Southard and wife Jean; sister, Annie Ray and husband Thomas; and one half-sister, Lillian Holder. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband of 48 years, Charles Lee Cook. She was also preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Sally and Earl Reynolds; half-brothers, Swanson Southard, Sebastian Southard, Luke Southard, Spurgeon Southard and by half-sisters, Martha White and Dorothy Stanley. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at Bessie's Chapel Baptist Church by Rev Ralph Groce and her son-in-law, John McCormick with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm on Tuesday at Moody-Davis Funeral Home where her body will remain until time to be carried to the church to lie-in-state thirty minutes prior to the service. It is requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in her memory to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson or to Bessie's Chapel Baptist Church.
