Mrs. Carolyn Hawks Hutchens

Mrs. Carolyn Hawks Hutchens, 69, of Cana, VA, passed away Thursday night, December 8, 2016, at her home. She was born March 3, 1947, in Surry County, the daughter of the late Swanson and Mary Bett Puckett Hawks. Mrs. Hutchens graduated from North Surry High School and was a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church. To fulfill her dream in working with children and make a difference in their lives, Mrs. Hutchens career started with the Carroll County School System as a teacher’s aid. While working as an aid; raising and caring for her family along with caring for her mother suffering from Alzheimer’s, Mrs. Hutchens took classes at Radford University, University of Virginia and completed her studies to become a teacher, graduating from High Point University. She was employed for 33 years with the Carroll School System before being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She is survived by her devoted husband, Leonard Ray Hutchens; loving sons, Leonard Ray Hutchens, Jr., Tim Hutchens, wife, Sherry and their children, Allison and Brian Lawson, Amber and Jake Rogers and their children, Isabella and Aaron, and Timothy “T.J.” Hutchens, Jr., Christopher “Chris” Hutchens and friend, Karen Reece and her children, Rene and Will Ault and their daughter, Brimleigh Jade; and Joey Bombe; two special cousins, Lynn Casstevens and Jess Puckett and a host of many others. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hutchens was preceded in death by her brother, Billy Hawks and sister, Rachel Bowman. The funeral service will be held Saturday, December 10, 2016, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. David Sechrist officiating. A private interment will follow. There will be no formal visitation at the funeral home.
