Mrs. Cenda "Ethel" Ruth Ross Rakes

Mrs. Cenda "Ethel" Ruth Ross Rakes, age 97 of Woolwine, passed away Monday, August 15, 2011 at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart. She was born in Patrick County on July 20, 1914 to the late Abe and Mary Vie Ross. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Rakes was preceded in death by her husband, Everette Lee Rakes; a son, Eugene Ross; a daughter, Jean Curtis; two grandchildren, Tyrone Curtis and Beverly Curtis; four sisters, Ella Taylor, Callie Thurston, Thelma Matthews and Gladys Menefee; and two brothers, James Rakes and Leonard Ross. She was a member of West Liberty Church.
Mrs. Rakes is survived by three grandsons, Larry Curtis and wife, Debra, Junior Curtis, Kenneth Curtis and wife, Nancy; eight great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Willie Curtis of Greensboro, North Carolina; one sister, Rosie Via of Richmond; two sisters-in-law, Lorene Ross of Columbus, Ohio and Nancy Rakes of Maryland; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; and a special neighbor, Bessie Wells of Woolwine.
Funeral services for Mrs. Rakes will be held Thursday, August 18, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. Burial will follow in the Rakes Family Cemetery, Ridge Road, Woolwine.
