Mrs. Colleen Gregory Barham

Mrs. Colleen Gregory Barham, age 89, of Temple, Texas, formerly of Mount Airy, North Carolina, passed away Monday, July 25, 2016, at Arbor House in Temple with her daughter by her side. Mrs. Barham was born on May 25, 1927, in Surry County to the late James Elmer and Mary Ann Atkins Gregory. She grew up on a tobacco farm in Surry County and later graduated valedictorian of Beulah High School. She attended the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina and graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She was a dedicated teacher and taught fifth and sixth grade for over thirty years in Winston-Salem. She married Howard Lee Barham, Jr. on June 1, 1952, and they had a loving marriage for thirty-three years until his death in 1985. They had a son and daughter: Howard Lee Barham, III, who was stillborn, and Sarah Barham Linz of Temple, Texas. In 2011, when Mrs. Barham's health began to decline, she moved to Temple, Texas to be near her daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren. Mrs. Barham was a devout Baptist all her life and a long-time member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, husband, and son, Mrs. Barham was preceded in death by two brothers, Herbert Thurmond Gregory and Cicero Gregory, and one sister, Maurine Smith. Survivors include her daughter, Sarah, and husband, Walter of Temple; four grandchildren: Emily Linz of San Antonio, Texas, William Linz, Mary Catherine Linz, and Margaret Linz, all of Temple; one sister, Magdalene Stockton of Mount Airy, one brother, Rex Gregory of Mount Airy, one sister-in-law Ina Mae Gregory of Mount Airy and several nieces and nephews. The Funeral service will be conducted 11 AM Tuesday August 2, 2016 at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy by the Rev. Alton Bledsoe. Friends will be received Tuesday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Interment will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens in Mount Airy.
