Mrs. Cora Ilene Hale Terry Clifton, age 95 of Meadows of Dan, passed away on Monday, June 16, 2008 at her home. She was born in Floyd County on March 10, 1913, the 12th of 16 children born to the late George W. and Emma Turner Hale. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Clifton was preceded in death by her husbands, William Hugh Terry and Arzie E. Clifton; two sons, James Lee Terry and Elder William Hale Terry; one granddaughter; two great-granddaughters and one step-grandson; six sisters, Madeline Hale, Flora Williams, Annie Thompson, Attaway Blackwell, Elva Dickerson, Glada Bowers; and eight brothers, Roy, Bill, Irvin, Herbert, Vernon, Versal, Bernice and Jesse Hale. She was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many people, and was a longtime member of the New Bell Spur Primitive Baptist Church having served as church clerk for 41 years.
Mrs. Clifton is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Elder Alan and Loraine Terry of Floyd and Tommy and Gardella Terry of Woodlawn; three daughters and sons-in-law, Marie and Dale Bowman of Meadows of Dan, Ruthy and Garnett Hall of Hillsville and Janie and Garnett Largen of Dugspur; two special daughters-in-law, Lucy W. Terry of York, South Carolina and Glenna T. Terry of Meadows of Dan; a brother and sister-in-law, Warren G. and Pauline Hale of Roanoke. She is also survived by three stepchildren and spouses, Shelby and Chuck Cochran, David and Winkie Clifton and Linda and Roger Chilton; 22 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren and 1 step-great-great-grandchild; also four sisters-in-law, Edrie T. Clifton, Willadean G. Terry, Lillian C. Wood and Reva C. Wyatt and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mrs. Clifton will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at the New Bell Spur Primitive Baptist Church with Elders Larry Hollandsworth, Carl Terry, Mark Terry and Tim McGrady and Rev. Russell Payne officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and at other times at the home. Flowers will be appreciated, or memorials may be made to the New Bell Spur Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Odetta Terry, 1222 Woodstock Road, Meadows of Dan, Virginia 24120 or to Hospice of Patrick County, 835 Woodland Drive, Suite 101, Stuart, Virginia 24171.
