Mrs. Doris Leanna Hiatt Vernon, 94, of Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2018, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mrs. Vernon was born May 17, 1923, in Surry County, the daughter of the late Ashby and Maude Ellen Belton Hiatt. She retired from Spencer’s Inc. after many years of service and was a life time member of Shelton Church of the Brethren. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and J. Fred Norman, Jr. of Cary; two sons and daughters-in-law, Oliver and Judy Vernon and Kent and Jerallene Vernon, all of Mount Airy, and Shirley Vernon of Yadkinville ; nine grandchildren, Kim (Bob) Mallin of Antigua, Lissa Norman of New Bern, John Norman of Wilmington, Michael (Tara) Vernon, Anessa Vernon, and Travis (Jasmine) Vernon, all of Mount Airy, Eli Vernon of Lexington, Stephanie Vernon of Mocksville, and Dorissa Vernon of Lexington; stepgrandchildren, Jeffrey Blackmon and Ann, Jessica, Brandy, Barbara, Adam; great-grandchildren, Madison Vernon, Talan Vernon, Tanner Vernon, Taylor Vernon, Aidan Vernon, Hannah Key, James Key, Sunny Vernon, Kenzie Grantz and Tyler Grantz; step great grandchildren, Jackson and Amelia Blackmon and Adrian Govea. sister, Joan Gammons of Mount Airy; and a brother, G.W. Hiatt of Memphis, TN. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Vernon was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Lloyd Vernon; a son, Rodney Vernon; two grandsons, Mitch Vernon and Thomas Rodney Vernon, Jr.; two sisters, Lucille Hiatt and Marie Johnson; and six brothers, Raymond Hiatt, Arlyss Hiatt, Arnold Hiatt, Bobby Hiatt, Edsel Hiatt, and Royst Hiatt. The funeral service will be held Saturday, February 17, 2018, at 2:00 PM at Shelton Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Joe Smith and the Rev. Rusty Reed officiating. Entombment will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where her body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes before the funeral service.
