Mrs. Dorothy Rakes Morrison

Mrs. Dorothy Rakes Morrison, age 97 of Ridgeway, passed away Monday, December 27, 2010 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. She was born in Patrick County on January 15, 1913 to the late Peter J. and Mary Ann Bowling Rakes. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Morrison was preceded in death by her husband, Brewster R. Morrison; her step-mother, Lera Hopkins Rakes; and two brothers, Kermit J. Rakes and Herbert W. Rakes. She had been a member of Sycamore Baptist Church for 79 years, and was a member of Sunday School Class #7 of Horsepasture Christian Church.
Mrs. Morrison is survived by one son, Coy L. Morrison and wife, Judy H. Morrison of Abingdon; one daughter, Pauline M. Minter and husband, James O. Minter, Jr. of Ridgeway; one brother, Roy J. Rakes and wife, Ann P. Rakes of Bowie, Maryland; one sister, Maybelle Flora and husband, Ernest Flora of Boones Mill; three half-sisters, Martha Nolen of Martinsville, Sylvia Scruggs and husband, Leonard Scruggs of Rancho Cordova, California and Yvonne Maxwell and husband, Gary Maxwell of Las Vega, Nevada; three grandchildren, Brenda Iles and husband, Thomas Iles, Carol Alley and husband, Jeff Alley and Tamela Kaye Morrison; three great-grandsons, Karim D. Oubouzar, Sasha Oubouzar and Amal J. Oubouzar; one great-granddaughter, Heather M. Alley; and one great-great-grandson, Rowan Chase Alley.
Funeral services for Mrs. Morrison will be held Friday, December 31, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Sycamore Baptist Church with Rev. Gerald Melton and Pastor David Cuthbertson officiating. Burial will following in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church, and other times at the home on 1375 Wagon Trail Road, Ridgeway.
