Mrs. Dorothy Franklin Johnson Riggs

Mrs. Dorothy Franklin Johnson Riggs, age 81, of Mount Airy, passed away Sunday evening, January 21, 2018 at Northern Hospital of Surry County, Skilled Care Unit. She was born in Surry County on February 2, 1936, one of thirteen children to the late John Frank and Olevia Hemmings Johnson. She was a member of Community Baptist Church and had retired from Perry Manufacturing after 35 dedicated years of service. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be deeply missed. Left to cherish her memory are one daughter and three sons-in-law, Jan and Johnny Carpenter, Tim Wilson, and Ricky Thomas and wife Becky; six grandchildren, Matthew Thomas, Jacob Thomas, Caleb Thomas and fiancé Casey White, Christy Carpenter Horton and husband Neal, John Carpenter and wife Savannah, and Jessica Wilson Robertson and husband Randy; six great-grandchildren and one on the way, Emmory Thomas, Anslee Thomas, Maggie Robertson, Ellie Robertson, Bryson Horton, Amelia Horton, and “June Bug” on the way; sisters and brothers-in-law, Foye and Birchard Younger, Geraldine and Rayburn Sykes, Kathleen and Alex Hege, and Georgie Mosley; brothers and sisters-in-law, Wade and Mary Lou Johnson, Paul and Joann Johnson, Billy and Rita Johnson, Jimmy and Nelda Johnson, Andrea Johnson, and Bessie Johnson; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Riggs was preceded in death by two daughters, Brenda Gail Riggs Thomas and Vickie Ann Riggs Wilson; her husband, Bobby Lee Riggs; a sister and two brothers-in-law, Vera and Chester Moseley, and Aubrey Mosley; and three brothers and a sister-in-law, Bernie Johnson, Greer Johnson, and Otis and Shirley Johnson. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday morning, January 24, 2018 at Community Baptist Church at 11:00am with Rev. Kenneth Jessup officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday night, January 23, 2018 from 6 – 8pm at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Moody Funeral Home to assist the family with final expenses.
