Mrs. Dorothy Mae Shelton Slate

Mrs. Dorothy Mae Shelton Slate, 96 of Mt. Airy, passed away peacefully early Sunday morning September 11, 2016 at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Slate was born on May 30, 1920 in Surry County to the late Wilford Shelton and Hussie Joyce Shelton Jackson. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be dearly missed by all that knew her. She was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Slate is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law, Ruth Byrd of Archdale, Barbara and Bill Wight of Mt. Airy, and Mary Lee Hiatt of Mt. Airy; a daughter-in-law, Gail Slate of Mt. Airy; eleven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a half-brother and sister-in-law, J. D. Jackson and Pat of Faith, NC. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Slate was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Clyde Slate; two sons Donald Gray Slate and Clyde “C.J.” Slate; three grandchildren; a sister, Virginia Klutz; two brothers, Wilford Shelton, Jr. and Alton Shelton and three half-brothers; and a son-in-law, James Hiatt. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mt. Airy at 11:00 AM with Rev. Pete King and Dr. David Sparks officiating with burial to follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. Family will receive friends on Monday night, September 12, 2016 at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
