Mrs. Elaine Thomas Belcher, age 72 of Woolwine passed away Saturday at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was born in Franklin County on May 30, 1938 to the late Maurice Thomas and Ora Hash Thomas. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by a brother, W. Paul Thomas. Mrs. Belcher was a Substitute Teacher at Woolwine Elementary; volunteered with the Backpack Program and Safety Rope; she was a member of the Red Hat Society, D.A.R. in Floyd; the Buffalo Ridge Homemakers Association, Woolwine United Methodist Church where she was involved in numerous committees and activities; and was a secretary for former Senate Minority Leader Edward Hall. Elaine was always helping others.
Surviving is her husband of 52 years, William F. "Willie" Belcher of the home; one son and daughter in law, Dean and Diane Belcher of Willis; three grandchildren, Amanda Ann Belcher of California, Rachel Elaine Belcher, and Samuel Thomas Belcher both of Willis; one great grandson, Jaxson Dean; and two sisters, Nancy Henley of Roanoke and Ilene Spencer of Huntsville, AL.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Woolwine United Methodist Church with Pastor Sandy Wright and Rev. Jim Churchwell officiating. Burial will follow in the Woolwine Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 to 8 at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.
