Mrs. Estelle Belton

Estelle Greenwood Belton (Lillian Estelle), age 93, of Mount Airy, North Carolina passed away peacefully at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, North Carolina on Wednesday, August 2, 2017. Mrs. Belton was born in Surry County on April 27, 1924 to the late Joseph Gordon and Martha Frances King Greenwood. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Conway Belton who died October 5, 1986. In her younger years, Mrs. Belton proudly worked at the original downtown Belk Department Store in Mt. Airy. Following World War II, she worked with her husband as the bookkeeper in their family owned business, Temple Esso which was located on Market Street and later Belton’s Gulf on North Main Street. She was a lifetime and faithful member of Central United Methodist Church in Mount Airy. In her adult years, Mrs. Belton was an active member of the Ross Francisco Sunday School Class, Co-chairman of the CUMC Bereavement Committee and recipient of a life-time membership award in United Methodist Women. For years she lovingly made sure that all of the CUMC shut-ins were remembered with a box of “Russell Stover Chocolates” at Christmas. She was a faithful servant of the Lord and truly cared about her church family even through her declining years. As a proud graduate of the Mount Airy High School Class of 1941, Mrs. Belton played a key role in helping plan her class reunions throughout the years. For her dedicated efforts in keeping up and communicating with all of their classmates, the class of 1941 surprised Estelle with a “This is Your Life” awards dinner and program at Cross Creek Country Club at her 50th reunion. Mrs. Belton also was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, VFW (Veterans Foreign War) and Mount Airy Woman’s Club. She is survived by her son, Benjamin Gordon Belton and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Phifer Belton of Morganton, NC; granddaughters Jaime Belton Norket (Jim) of Greenville, SC, Heather Elizabeth Belton of Hickory, NC and Catherine Belton Hogan (Jon) of Davidson, NC; five great grandchildren, Jordan Morettie of Hickory, NC, Tanner Matheson of Greenville, SC, Brittney Matheson of Greenville, SC, Brianna Matheson of Greenville, SC and Ward Hogan of Davidson, NC; her dear sister, Eleanor Greenwood Powell-Hines (Clarence) of Mount Airy and special sister-in-law, Joyce Greenwood of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews who loved their “Aunt EE”.
