Mrs. Eva Mae Smart Shockley, age 89 of Gretna, and formerly of Patrick County, passed away Thursday, December 27, 2007 at her home. She was born in McAlpin, West Virginia on May 3, 1918. Mrs. Shockley was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Lewis Shockley, Sr.; her parents, Grover Smart and Goldie Williams Smart Martin; and three brothers, Buren Smart, Perry W. Smart and John O. Smart. She was a member of Concord United Methodist Church where she had been a Sunday school teacher and church treasurer, and had been a member of the Patrick County Home Demonstration Club.
Mrs. Shockley is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Carol S. and Ronald Peterson of Gretna; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard L. Shockley, Jr. and Diana of Stuart; two grandchildren, Kathryn Paterson and Kelly Jo Shockley; and seven brothers, Percy L. Smart of Graham, North Carolina, Kenneth Smart of Burlington, North Carolina, Grover C. Smart of Gainesville, Florida, Gene Smart of Doswell, Charles Smart of Dixie, Georgia, Harold Smart of Charlottesville and Fred Smart of Stuart.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Concord United Methodist Church with Pastor Mark Clayton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart, and at other times at the home of Richard Shockley.
