Mrs. Garnet Whitt Dawson, 69, of Elkin, woke up in the presence of God on Friday, September 21, 2012 after an extended illness. She was born in Wyoming County, West Virginia on October 10, 1942 to the late John Lewis and Laura Melissa Green Whitt. Mrs. Dawson was a homemaker, who devoted her life to the work of the Lord, being a loving precious mother and her family and church, all whom she dearly loved. She was a dedicated member of Anchored In Jesus Baptist Church where she enjoyed fellowship with her fellow Christian friends and singing in the chior. Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 50 years, who affectionally called her "Honey Pot", James Edward Dawson, of the home; her treasured children and spouses, Howard and Christy Dawson of Elkin, Vivian and Darryl Bledsoe of Dobson, Melissa and Scott Maurer of Mount Airy and Theresa and Danny Atkins also of Mount Airy; eight beloved grandchildren, Jeremy Dawson, Christina and husband Benji McHone, Joey Allgood (Dawson),Jacob Atkins, Wade Dawson, Jared Atkins, Savannah Bledsoe and Zachary Dawson; one great-grandson, who brought her great joy and was precious to her heart, Dawson McHone; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Juanita Lester of Sophia, West Virginia an Freda and Willie Lester of Helen, West Virginia, and Barbara Laughter also of Sophia, West Virginia; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred and Bonnie Whitt of Bud, West Virginia and Hobert and Peggy Whitt of Dobson; numerous special nieces and nephews; and her church family. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Dawson was preceded in death by a grandchild; a sister, Mary Sizemore and three brothers, Estel Whitt, Maford Whitt and Howard Whitt.Funeral services will be held a 2 pm on Monday, September 24, 2012 at the Anchored In Jesus Baptist Church by Rev. Larry Stone with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday evening from 6 to 8 pm where her body will remain to lie-in-state thirty minutes prior to the service. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Anchored In Jesus Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Rev. Larry Stone 942 Redbrush Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
