Mrs. Garnett Mae Cassell Atkins, 81, of Winston Salem, passed away Sunday, May 26, 2013 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston Salem. She was born in Surry County on November 9, 1931 to the late John and Ola Bumgardner Cassell. Mrs. Atkins was retired from Spencer's Incorporated and was a member of Blackwater United Methodist Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her. She is survived by a daughter, Charlene Horton of Winston Salem; a son, Jackie Atkins of Mt. Airy; three grandchildren, Dale Atkins of Mt. Airy, Kevin Persinger of East Bend, Hope Edwards of Mt. Airy; five great grandchildren, Chris Atkins, Brittany Atkins, Alec Bullington, Courtney Holland, and Corey Atkins; three great great grandchildren, Blade Hill, Bradyn Holland, and Donavon Jessup. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Atkins was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Atkins; three grandchildren, Crystal Bullington, Nicole Horton, and Jonathon Horton; a special friend, Earnestine Venable. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Blackwater United Methodist Church with Rev. Ted Turman, Rev. Mac Cassell, and Rev. Ray Hutson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy where her body will remain until taking her to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will be meeting at the home of Hope Edwards 220 Thomas Ln, Mt. Airy.
