Mrs. Gladys Rhodes "Mimi" Akers, age 99 of Stuart, passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at the Landmark Center in Stuart. She was born in Patrick County on December 23, 1909 to the late Richard J. Rhodes and Rosalie Martin Rhodes. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Akers was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Murray Akers; four sisters, Hattie Tuck, Lucy Flippin, Carrie Palmer and Sallie Floyd; and six brothers, Robert, Ernest, Roy, Perry, Emmett and Charles Rhodes. She had been a member of Stuart Baptist Church for over 60 years.
Mrs. Akers is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Alice and Richard Braverman of Rochester, New York; one son and daughter-in-law, Cecil Murray, Jr. and Lourdes Akers of Stuart; six grandchildren, Kristi A. Kadlubowski, and husband, Michael, Courtney Akers, Lisa B. Yarbrough, and husband, Scott, Jill N. Braverman, and husband, Jorge Perez-Albela, Charlotte A. Berry, and husband, Neil and Arthur A. Anthony, IV; six great-grandchildren, Oscar M. Yarbrough, Quentin Rhodes Yarbrough, Shawn Kadlubowski, Aaron Kadlubowski, Isabela Berry and Joshua Berry, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mrs. Akers will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Stuart Baptist Church with Revs. Robert Belcher, Clint Hopkins and Jim Churchwell officiating. Burial will follow in the Sycamore Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Stuart Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Stuart Baptist Church, P.O. Box 472, Stuart, VA 24171. Moody Funeral Home in Stuart is in charge of the arrangements.
