Mrs. Guelda V. Smith

Guelda Foy (Vernon) Smith, Age 74, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, November 19, 2015. She was born to the late Chester and Carrie Vernon on February 22, 1941. She grew up as a farmer's daughter in Mount Airy, NC with three sisters, Joy, Delta, and Carol. She later married the late Mr. P. Harold Smith who's death preceded hers by 19 years. She obtained a degree at Forsyth Technical Community College and enjoyed a career with Wachovia Student Loans, where she gained many friends, most of whom she kept in close contact with long into her retirement. Owing to her upbringing with few discretionary funds, she made every effort possible to provide for the needs and wants of her only child, Mr. Stephen H. Smith; often herself going without so that her son could have more. All of this time she was a close friend of God. A devoted Christian like no other, she was an active member of Gospel Light Baptist Church in Walkertown, NC. Loving to entertain, she often held holiday parties in her home, lavishing her friends with fellowship and love. In her retirement, she traveled all over the US with her church group, as well as Europe, Kuwait, and South Korea to visit her son and his family. A determined survivor, she fought two bouts with cancer, finally succumbing after ten years of amazing success. Her quiet strength, resiliency, love of the Lord, and love for her family were and remain an inspiration to all who knew her. She is survived by her sisters, her son, her daughter-in-law Zarina, and her granddaughter Danica. She will be greatly missed, but truly Heaven has gained a Saint. Her memorial service will be held at Gospel Light Baptist in Walkertown NC on Monday, November 23, 2015 at 10:00 am. A graveside service will be held at New Bethel Church just North of Mount Airy on Piper's Gap Rd. at 2pm. Visitors attending her memorial service are encouraged to bring personal photos of Guelda to display at the church during the service.
