Mrs. Helen E. May

Mrs. Helen E. May went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 2, 2016. For the past three years, she made her home in the Skilled Nursing Unit of Northern Hospital of Surry County. She is survived by her three children, Vicki York, Robert (Cathy) May, and Dottie (Mark) Gunstra; five grandchildren, Garrison (John) Schmidt, Matthew (Amber) Gunstra, Alan (Kyle) York, Lindsey (Dan) Tyson, and Lauren May; three great-grandchildren, Korbyn Tyson, Mayley York, and Mary Carter York; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Foster May; her mother, Mable Van Wyk; her father, Ora James; two brothers, Bill James and Alton James; and her sister, Mable Halferty. Mrs. May was of the Baptist faith. She and her husband lived and raised their family in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where she worked as Quality Assurance Coordinator at Broward General Medical Center for 18 years. In 1985, Mrs. May and her husband moved to Mount Airy to be closer to family. She was an active volunteer at Northern Hospital of Surry County, and she was instrumental in starting the Lifeline Emergency System. Volunteering was her passion. She logged more than 15,000 volunteer hours and was honored as Volunteer of the Year during one of her 17 years of service. She was also a member of the Mount Airy Women’s Club serving in many positions. She loved to read, watch Turner Classic movies, and bake cakes and banana bread. The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home on Saturday, July 9, 2016 from 10:00 until 11:00 with a memorial service immediately follow in Moody Funeral Home Chapel. The family thanks the staff of the Skilled Nursing Unit for their compassionate care.
