Mrs. JoAnn Elizabeth Hodges Bowman, 78 of Pilot Mountain passed away Friday, January 25, 2013 at Northern Hospital of Surry County. She was born in Surry County on July 7, 1934 to the late Howard Norman and Minnie Edna Calloway Hodges. Mrs. Bowman was retired from Kentucky Derby and was of the Baptist faith. She is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Karen Bowman Pollard of Pilot Mountain, Theresia H. and Michael Gray Wilson of Mt. Airy; two sons and daughter-in-law, James Gilmer "Jimmy" Bowman, Jr. and Carol Durham Bowman of Pilot Mountain, Ricky Gale Draughn of Mt. Airy; nine grandchildren and spouses, Daniel Isiah Bowman and Katie Dearmin of Pilot Mountain, Jessica Nicole Bowman of Pilot Mountain, Tonette Brintle of Mt. Airy, Brandi Draughn of Mt. Airy, Joshua Shane Tilley, David James "D.J." Cash of Pilot Mountain, Janet Lynn Draughn of Mt. Airy, Casey Michele Wilson and Tony Gwyn of Winston-Salem, and Hannah Lee Draughn of Dobson; ten great grandchildren; a sister, Elaine Marion of Dobson; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert "Bob" and Darla Hodges of Lowgap; a sister-in-law, MaryAnn Hodges Pippin Taylorsville; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Wade and Ernie Bowman; a sister-in-law, Wade and Ernie Bowman; a sister-in-law, Willa Dean Bowman. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Bowman was preceded in death by her husband, James Gilmer Bowman, Sr.; two sisters, Eloise Hiatt and Frances Lawrence; three brothers, Clayton, Hildred "Jack", and Sidney Joseph "SJ" Hodges. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 28, 2013 at 2:00 PM at New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Trent Lyons officiating. Burial will follow in New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy where she will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state for 30 minutes before the service.
