Mrs. Lela Mae Atkins Jones

Mrs. Lela Mae Atkins Jones, 89, of Mt. Airy passed away at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson on Monday, September 5, 2016. She was born in Surry County on March 12, 1927 to the late Sanford and Mandy Ellen Tolbert Atkins (Sawyers). Mrs. Jones retired from White Plains Christian School Cafeteria and was a faithful member of White Plains Baptist Church for 63 years. She is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Rachel Barker, Betty and Zane Goins and Kay Surratt; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Rev. George Jones, Jr., Ricky and Candy Jones; grandchildren and spouses, Deborah and Terry Goins, Melissa and Neal Hegler, Mary Ann and Nolan Davis, Joey and Emily Jones, step grandchildren, Timmy and Katie Goins and Misty Goins; Sandra and Rev. Butch Holder and Dennis Gates; several great grandchildren; three great-great grandsons; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mary Ruth Puckett, and Louise and Bill Kauffman; a brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Kim Sawyers. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Jones, a son, Billy Ray Jones; two special great granddaughters, Taylor Nicole Thompson and Megan Marie Davis; her step father, Fred Sawyers; a daughter-in-law, Betty Jones; a son-in-law, Garry Surratt; brothers, Bill Sawyers, Ed Atkins and Tommy Sawyers. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 9, 2016 at White Plains Baptist Church with Pastor David Tucker, Rev. Butch Holder, Bro. Darrell Price and Rev. Tom Delp officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
