Mrs. Lillie Eunice Thomas Mays, of Meadows of Dan, passed away February 24, 2011 at Laurel Meadows Nursing Center in Laurel Fork. She was born on March 13, 1921 in Amelia County, Virginia, and was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Lewis 'Red' Mays, and her two sons, William Wetmore 'Billy' Mays and Robert L. Mays. She is survived by her three grandchildren, Robert Lewis Mays, Jr., Marine Major Christopher Blair Mays, and Pamela Mays Garcia, as well as nine great grandchildren, three remaining sisters Nellie Wiser, Mabel Childress, Dorothy Spence and many nieces and nephews.
Lillie was independent and hard working. She was a successful business woman, a loving wife, a proud mother and grandmother and a good friend. She was a talented cook, a prolific quilter, knitter and crocheter, and an avid reader. She enjoyed boating, fishing, card games and entertaining family and friends. Lillie endured many personal hardships with the early loss of her husband and both sons, but she had faith in her Savior Christ Jesus and was confident in God's plan for her life. She moved to Meadows of Dan in 1989 to live with her sister Nellie and cultivated many dear friendships and enjoyed a long and full retirement embracing life on the mountain becoming active in many community events and was a member of the Mayberry Presbyterian Church. The family wishes to express their appreciation to her close and dear friends who brought her so much joy, love and companionship. The family also wishes to thank the staff and nurses at Heritage Hall for their compassionate and loving care in her last 18 months.
A memorial service will be held at the Moody Funeral Home Chapel, 202 W. Blue Ridge Street, Stuart, Virginia 24171on Saturday, March 5th at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the American Cancer Society, Attn: Memorial Gifts, 4240 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, Virginia 23060 or Mayberry Presbyterian Church Building Fund, c/o Henry Mathieu, 776 Pinnacle Point, Meadows of Dan, Virginia 24120.
