Mrs. Lora Vilena Mitchell Smith

Lora Vilena Mitchell Smith, age 83, passed away February 7, 2017 at Pruitt Health in Elkin, NC. She was born August 31, 1933 to the late George Mitchell and the late Hester Pilson Mitchell. Vilena was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who loved her family, friends, church and God. She so enjoyed social gatherings with family and friends. Most importantly she was blessed with a special gift of ministering to others. She and her husband, Bill, of 64 years farmed and ran a Grade A Dairy until she was in her late 40’s. Then she took on the challenge of going back to school and earned her nursing degree. Becoming a nurse in her early 50’s allowed her to use her gifts and talents to touch so many lives. She retired from Hugh Chatham Nursing Center in 2003. Another special gift Vilena had was the “ear” for gospel music. Everyone loved hearing her play the piano and she was the church organist at Gum Orchard Baptist Church where she was a member. Everyone was blessed who knew her and who received her special touch. Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Billy Baker Smith; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Randy Bowers; son, Bruce, and special friend, Geralline Quesinberry; special adoptive son, Jimmy and Sue Gammons; grandchildren, Alan and Olivia Bowers and Lewis Smith; sister, Helen White; nieces, Lora Rosamond, Ruth Kidd and Betty Foster and nephew, David White. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by a foster brother, Roshell Mayes. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 10, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Gum Orchard Baptist Church with the Reverend Joe Lambert and Reverend James Hobernitch officiating. Burial will be in Crestwood Memory Gardens. The family will received friends Thursday, February 9, 2017 from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Moody-Davis Funeral Services in Dobson. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Gum Orchard Baptist Church, c/o Linda Martin, 171 Columbus Lane, Elkin, NC 28621. The family would like to thank the staff at Pruitt Nursing Center and especially the wonderful caregivers Vilena and Bill have had the past two years.
