Mrs. Mae Holland Murphy, age 90 of Spencer, passed away Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. She was born in Hanson County, South Carolina to the late Raleigh Paris Holland and Effie Anne Mills Holland. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Murphy was preceded in death by her husband, James William Murphy, Jr.; a daughter, Anne M. Haile; a great-grandson, Justin Blackwell; and a brother, Raleigh Paris Holland. She was a lifetime member of Old Well Christian Church, and had retired from Bassett-Walker Inc.
Mrs. Murphy is survived by six daughters and sons-in-law, Helen Martin of Martinsville, Jean and Thomas Blackwell of Rocky Mount, Betty Reed of Martinsville, Doris and Jerry Steinberg of Salem, Brenda and Wesley Burgess of Stuart, Teresa and Virgil Martin of Spencer; two sons and daughters-in-law, James Bernard and Margie Murphy of Bassett, Larry William and Melise Murphy of Spencer; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Murphy will be held Friday, February 19, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor Don Forrester officiating. Burial will follow in Old Well Christian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
