Magdalene graduated from White Plains High School and Appalachian State. She married the late Louis H. Comer and they lived together until his death in 1993. Magdalene was a school teacher in Surry and Wake counties and won multiple “Teacher of the Year” honors. Upon retirement, she and Louis returned to the family farm in Surry County. In addition to her lifelong dedication to her churches, Magdalene was a leader in many community activities, and was honored as Surry County Volunteer of the Year. In addition to being a founding member of the Greenwood Forest Baptist Church in Cary, Magdalene served on the Board of Deacons and was a long time Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church of Mt Airy. She volunteered at the Mt Airy Library and was a docent at the Historical Society Museum. Her many years of volunteer work at the Northern Hospital of Surry County was rewarded with an appointment to the hospital Board of Trustees. Despite her busy schedule serving her community and friends, Magdalene’s greatest accomplishment was being a beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis, brother C. Braxton Turpin, Mt Airy and is survived by her sister Lorene T. Clay, Charlotte. She also is survived by her daughter Kathryn Comer Creel and son-in-law William C. Creel, Cary; son George Louis Comer, Charlotte; grandchildren Charly (wife Debbie) and Brad (wife Abby) Creel and Amanda and Matthew Comer, and four great grandchildren who continue to honor Magdalene by enjoying the county home, woodland trails, and river front playground she provided for them. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, December 19, 2015 at the First Baptist Church in Mt. Airy with Dr. Roger Gilbert and Rev. Jay Meadows officiating. A private interment will follow later in the day. The family will receive friends in the Fireside Room at the church on Saturday from 10:00 am until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions should be made to the Organ Fund of First Baptist Church of Mt Airy, 714 N Main St, Mt Airy, NC 27030.
