Mrs. Martha Shelton Adkins, age 83, a resident of the Blue Ridge Nursing Center of Stuart, and formerly of Fairystone Park Highway, Stuart, passed away Tuesday, December 26, 2006 at the R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart. She was born in Patrick County on June 14, 1923 to the late Posey L. and Lillie Gray Shelton. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Adkins was preceded in death by her husband, Emmitt Elwyn Adkins, one brother, R. L. Shelton; and two sisters, Lois Morris and Mary Allen. She was a member of Stuart Baptist Church, and had been the manager and operator of the former Virginian Restaurant. She was one of the founding organizers of the Home Alone Thanksgiving meal, and had been active for many years in their fundraising.
Mrs. Adkins is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Winfred Stowe of Ridgeway, Angela and Earl (Reese, Jr.) Morris of Chesapeake, and Lydia and Randy McCallister of Pulaski; two grandchildren, Barry Stowe and Nicholas Morris; one step-grandchild, Laura Prichett; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service for Mrs. Adkins will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at Stuart Baptist Church with Dr. Clint Hopkins and Rev. Lee Shelton officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 2728 Colonial Ave., Suite 2, Roanoke, VA 24015. Moody Funeral Home in Stuart is in charge of the arrangements.
