Mrs. Martha Lou Phillips Pullins, age 90 of Stuart, passed away November 11, 2009 at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center. She was born in Patrick County on July 9, 1919 to the late John Henry and Catherine Spencer Phillips. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Pullins was preceded in death by her husband, Fletcher Pullins; two sons, Henry Pullins and Fletcher Pullins, Jr.; eight brothers, Calvin, Oliver, Jim, Posey, Lester, Jesse, David and Daniel Phillips; and two sisters, Geneva Rucker and May Cutchbertson. She was a member of Mount Calvary Holy Church where she was a mother of the church, choir member and missionary president. She had worked at Bassett-Walker Knitting in Stuart.
Mrs. Pullins is survived by ten daughters, Genetta Moore of Portsmouth, Ohio, Della Pilson of Woolwine, Gertrude Harris of Fieldale, Mattie Scott of High Point, North Carolina, Dorothy Pullins of Stuart, Irene Stubblefield of Reidsville, North Carolina, Glenda Joseph, Hattie Pullins, Marquenta Pullins and Alesia Bratton, all of Mount Vernon, New York; two sons, Laymon Pullins of Mount Vernon and James Garfield Pullins of New Rochelle, New York; 22 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Pauline Hayden of Princeton, West Virginia.
Funeral services for Mrs. Pullins will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Elder Joseph G. Carter officiating. Burial will follow in the Community Cemetery.
