Mrs. Mary Ruth Lawson

Mary Ruth Lawson, age 94, of Mount Airy, passed away on July 13, 2017. Ms. Lawson was born in Cana, Virginia on November 6, 1922, to the late Walker T. and Mary Magdalene McMillian. She retired in May 1992 from Lynne’s Hosiery Mill after 17 years of service, and worked at Spencer’s Hosiery Mill for a time before that. She was married for 27 years to the late Harvey Lawson, and then divorced. She and Mr. Lawson moved to Polo, Illinois in 1958 and raised their family there until 1972, when they returned to Mt. Airy. A devoted and loving Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, she held a strong faith in God and nurtured her family, friends and neighbors with Christian spirit and kindness. She took great joy in spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are daughters, Elaine Mick and Elizabeth Lawson, of Mt. Airy; son, James H. Lawson of Winston-Salem; daughter and son-in-law, Judy (Bob) Knudtson of Madison, Wisconsin; son-in-law, Robert Hoffman of Fishers, Indiana; eight grandchildren: Sherri (Mark) Clear, Sean Hoffman, A.J. Mick, Chad Mick, Brad Knudtson, Eric Knudtson, Brandy (Jon) Jones, Jay (Tasha) Lawson; eight great grandchildren: Caity Clear, Ben Clear, Logan Hoffman, Carter Lawson, Corbin Lawson, Camden Lawson, Nathan Jones, Kristen Jones; sister, Katherine Arrington of Mt. Airy, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Ms. Lawson was preceded in death by brothers Hampton, Dudley, Samuel and J. Leonard McMillian; sisters, Elsie (Milton) Smith and Connie McMillian; and her daughter, Mary Katherine Hoffman. The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Sunday, July 16th , a graveside service will follow at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Cana, VA at 3:00 p.m., with Hospice Chaplain Beverly Hatcher officiating. Flowers will be gratefully accepted or memorials may be sent to the Joan & Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017.
