Mrs. Mary Alice Johnson Lewis, age 94, of Mount Airy passed away on Friday February 26, 2016 at the Northern Hospital of Surry County. The daughter of the late Edgar Arlington and Reba McGrady Johnson, Mrs. Lewis was born in Waynesboro, GA, on April 11, 1921. Mrs. Lewis graduated from Toccoa Falls Bible College and moved to Mount Airy to serve as the Director of Christian Education at Flat Rock Presbyterian Church, and also First Presbyterian Church of Mount Airy, where she also served as a deacon and elder. During her first year in Mount Airy, Mary Alice fell in love with and married her husband of 39 years William Edward Lewis. She retired as director of Christian education after 25 years of faithful service, and began a new career as the insurance administrator at Quality Mills Inc. Mary Alice was passionate about helping the community through many church and civic organizations. She loved the children of Mount Airy, and along with her work at the church, she served as a member of Mount Airy City School Board for 9 years, and also as a Girl Scout leader for several years. Mary Alice had the honor of serving as the president of the Mount Airy Junior Woman’s Club, and the Mount Airy Woman’s Club. She was one of the founders of Hospice in Surry County, bringing this community the much-needed services that this organization provides; she also led as their President of the Board of Directors for two terms. She was a charter member of the Altrusa Club International in Surry County, and she also served as the Chairwoman of the North West Regional Library Board for several years. In addition to her many civic duties, Mary Alice’s love for music led her to be a choir member at the First Presbyterian Church, and a member of the Golden Notes singing group in Mount Airy for many years. Surviving are her daughter, Margaret Cameron Lewis of Raleigh; two sons, William Frank Lewis of Mount Airy, and Edward McGrady Lewis of Mount Airy; her granddaughter, Madison Lewis Short and her husband, August, of Banner Elk, NC; her sister, Brenda McBride of Waynesboro, GA; her step- brother Frank Tinley of Charleston, SC; her brother-in-law, David B. Hatcher and his wife Georgia; her sister-in-law Willie Johnson of Waynesboro, Georgia; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by her husband, William Edward Lewis; sister, Edna Frye; and brothers, Thomas Johnson, and Stanley Eugene “Jack” Johnson. A memorial service will be held Saturday March 5, 2016 at 2:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church in Mount Airy with Rev. Griff Gatewood officiating. The Lewis family will receive friends on Saturday, one hour prior to the service at The First Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The First Presbyterian Church of Mt. Airy, 326 South Main Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030 or Mountain Valley Hospice, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
