Mrs. Monnie Delene Pendleton Hughes Burgess

Mrs. Monnie Delene Hughes Burgess age 94 of Monroe, Georgia (formerly of Stuart, Virginia) passed away on July 24, 2017 at her daughter’s home. She was born on February 13, 1923 in Davy, West Virginia, to the late Oscar A. and Annie Elener Craig Pendleton. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husbands, Major Patrick Jewell Hughes and Woodrow Frelin Burgess; one grandson, John Daniel Phillips; and two sisters, Wilda Pendleton Vipperman and Thelma Pendleton Cardwell. Mrs. Burgess loved to read, garden, sew, knit, crochet, quilt, entertain family and guests and travel. She was of the Primitive Baptist faith for over 50 years. She loved the Lord and worshipped Him openly by playing her organ, piano, and singing. She was a realtor for the R. N. Green Company in Orange City, Florida. Monnie was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend to many.

Mrs. Burgess is survived by two sons, Patrick J. Hughes Jr. and wife, Diana of Springfield, Virginia and Kenneth T. Hughes and wife, Candace of Lebanon, Tennessee; two daughters Treva D. Phillips of Stuart, Virginia and Beverly H. Siler and husband, Jim of Monroe, Georgia; one sister Janice Pendleton Newman and husband, Garvin of Orange City, Florida; twelve grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service for Mrs. Burgess will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2017 at 11:00 am at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart with Pastor Mark Wright and speaker, Ronnie Owens officiating. Burial will immediately follow in the Hughes Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
