Mrs. Pauline Clemmie Rakes Handy, age 87 of Martinsville, passed away Sunday, October 16, 2011 at the Kindred Hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina. She was born in Patrick County on June 28, 1924 to the late Homer and Nannie Martin Rakes. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Handy was preceded in death by her husband, Winfred Handy; one sister, Jean Reynolds; and five brothers, Marion, Clarence, Howard, Leonard and Coy Rakes. She was a member of True Gospel Baptist Church, had been a CNA at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center, and was a daycare provider for over 40 years.
Mrs. Handy is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Emma Jean and James Mize, Donna and Jerry Wyatt, all of Martinsville; one son, Ralph Handy of Martinsville; three granddaughters, Elisa Hudson, Tonya Jessee and Tiffany Moore; and three great-grandchildren, Autumn Hudson, Evan Hudson and Colin Jessee.
Funeral services for Mrs. Handy will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor Steve Garner officiating. Burial will follow in the Rakes-Martin Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart, and at other times at the home of Donna and Jerry Wyatt, 699 Applewood Road in Martinsville.
