Mrs. Peggy Beck Smith

Mrs. Peggy Beck Smith, age 80, of Mount Airy, passed away Sunday night June 19, 2016 at the Joan & Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mrs. Smith was born in Salisbury on October 24, 1935 to Mr. Oscar George Beck, Jr. and Freeda Barnes Beck. She spent her growing up years with grandparents, Oscar George Beck, Sr. and Ossie Wilson Beck. During her time at Mooresville High School she was very active as a cheerleader, basketball player, drama club member and class officer. She was selected to go to Girl’s State in Raleigh in 1953. On October 28, 1954 she married Billy Grey Smith of Mount Airy, and they had two daughters, Sylvia Smith Gentry and Sharon Smith Hardy. From 1954 until 1958 she worked as regional secretary for Stanley Home Products in Winston Salem. For 30 years, she was a partner and an insurance agent with J. Earl Ramey at Granite City Insurance Agency. She also was a notary for 30 years. She was past president and long-time member of the Mount Airy Lady Lions. She loved her church, Calvary Baptist, where she was a member for 62 years. She taught Sunday school for a period of 60 years as her health permitted. She never met a stranger and loved people. She loved to travel, but most of all, she spent her life serving the Lord. Surviving is her husband, Billy Grey Smith, of the home; one daughter and two son-in-law, Sylvia and Randy Gentry and Rex Hardy, all of Mount Airy; grandchildren, Adrianne George and husband Richard Migliara, Tasha and Jackie Crotts, Chase and Shannon Hardy, and Stephen and Julie George; great-grandchildren, Gabriel George, Amelia George, Carrigan Crotts, Kylee Crotts, Campbell Hardy and Mason Hardy; brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles E. and Maria Beck of Mt. Airy and Jimmy and Maxine Beck of Orlando, FL. and a very special and longtime friend Claudia Bryant of Mt. Airy. In addition to her parents and grandparents Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Smith Hardy, a brother, Joe Beck. The funeral service will be held Thursday, June 23, 2016 at 1:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church with services conducted by Rev. Alex Martin. Burial will follow in Skyline Memory Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends Thursday, June 23, 2016 from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 314 South Franklin Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030 or to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
