Mrs. Perlie Smith Gunnell

Mrs. Perlie Irene Smith Gunnell, age 89 of Mt. Airy, passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at the Woltz Hospice Home. Mrs. Gunnell was born in Patrick County on November 22, 1922 to Henry Fultz and Ida Puckett Smith. Mrs. Gunnell and her husband, Ralph Gunnell, Sr., established Gunnell Grocery, which was a trusted and long standing community based business. She worked in the family business until 1992. Mrs. Gunnell was a member of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church. She leaves in sadness, a son and daughter-in-law, Ralph C. Gunnell, Jr. and wife, Dolly; a grandson, Greg Gunnell and wife Shannon; a great grandson, Blake Gunnell, a sister, Reba Dellionback of Ararat, VA and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gunnell was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Columbus Gunnell, Sr., a sister, Alpha Terry and brothers, Lacy Smith and Tyler Smith. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, July 20, 2012 at Moody Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Robert McCrary. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday night from 6:00 to 8:00 at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Haymore Memorial Baptist Church at 913 Rockford St., Mt. Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Mrs. Gunnell's special care giver and niece, Barbara Shelton, for all the kindness and love given to her.
