Mount Airy - Born October 20, 1935 in Surry County to the late William Howard Adkins and Lola Frances Mace Adkins, Rita Racheal Adkins Hiatt passed away peacefully in her home this past Sunday, October, 26, 2014. She was the loved and cherished wife of the late William Seth Hiatt. Together they gave life to five daughters, Shelia Johnson, Gina Tilton, Melody White, Chrystal Rhodes, and Ashley Flores, who in turn married Don Johnson, Brooks Tilton, David Smith, Nelson Rhodes, and Pete Flores. Their union brought forth twelve grandchildren, Justin Brim, Seth Johnson, Stanton White, Kabri White, Chase Johnson, Austin Tilton, Ashton Flores, Raven Tilton, Cheyenne Rhodes, Rachael Flores, Salem Flores and Tuscany Flores, and three great grandchildren, Nadia Brim, Jaylan Brim and Jaxon Brim due in December 2014. Rita is survived by two sisters, Aura Akers and May Mason, both of Mt. Airy. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Juanita Lowery and Faye Hiatt, and two brothers, William Adkins and Jay Adkins. From her Family: Mom was a being who loved the beauty in all things. She saw the beauty in everyone and all that they held within, and made those in her world feel loved and of great worth. It is said that few can remember the names of those who won last year's Pulitzer Prize, or even the last World Series, but one can easily remember the name of someone who made them feel important and valued. This is a gift mom possessed in abundance. She imparted it within each of us kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. From birth she told us we were wonderful, that we could do anything, that the world was there for the taking, and that what we had to offer the world was of divine worth. She also shared that this is true for all beings, that each individual is special. What a great blessing to have been raised in an environment that was so positive, so hopeful, so pure. Mom recognized the needs of others, and she acted upon this. If you had a need, she met it. If you had a dream, she shared it. She lived a selfless life, happy that she had a healthy body and mind. Everything else was extra, so she gave freely. Mom, we are so grateful for the life you led, for the example of unconditional love, for living life to its fullest and embracing all things in your path. In essence, we thank you for showing us the way. We love you mom, and pay tribute to you this day for the Great Spirit you are, and take comfort in knowing that it will live on through all those whose lives you have touched and nurtured, and in the heavens above. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, November 1, at 1:00 PM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with a celebration of her life to follow in the cultural hall at the church. The family will receive friends on Saturday at the church from 11:30 until the time of service.
