Mrs. Ruth Morris Blackburn, age 91 of Mt. Airy, passed away Friday, April 12, 2013 at Central Continuing Care. Mrs. Blackburn was born in Surry County on October 29, 1921 to Victor and Jessie Webb Morris. She was the co-owner/operator of Blackburn Coal Yard and was well known in the area for cake baking and decorating and even taught cake decorating through Surry Community College. Mrs. Blackburn was a charter member of Franklin Heights United Methodist Church. Surviving are daughters and son-in-law, Lynn and Earl Shelton of Mt. Airy; Detra Michaels of Stephens City, VA; Guyda and Terry Willmann of Mebane; a son and daughter-in-law, Maylon and Cheryl Blackburn of Cranbury, NJ; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren and one on the way; sisters, Marguerite Brown, Dorothy Boyles and Myrtle Morris all of Mt. Airy and a sister-in-law, Maude Morris also of Mt. Airy. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Blackburn was preceded in death by her husband, Guy R. Blackburn; a daughter, Eleanor Watson; a sister Katherine Brown and a brother, Howard Morris. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, April 15, 2013 at Franklin Heights United Methodist Church by Rev. Brenda Brashears. Burial will follow in Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 12:30 prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Franklin Heights United Methodist Church at 416 S. Franklin Rd., Mt. Airy, NC 27030 or to Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care at 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mt. Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express a special thank you to the wonderful staff at Central Continuing Care for the exceptional care given to Mrs. Blackburn during her stay there.
