Sarah Frances Hill Greenwood, age 89, of Mount Airy, North Carolina passed away peacefully at Ridgecrest Retirement Community in Mount Airy, North Carolina on Thursday, September 29, 2016 following a brief illness. Mrs. Greenwood was born in Forsyth County on March 15, 1927 to the late Gideon Dee Hill and Mary Frances Houser Hill. She graduated from Pilot Mountain High School and Draughn’s Business College. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 61 years, Wayne Greenwood. Mrs. Greenwood worked with her husband in their family owned business, Greenwood Floor Covering, for 20+ years and later joined W. T. Grant in Mount Airy as the personnel director. Her most rewarding position that touched countless lives was at Crossroads (Surry County Mental Health ADAP Program) where she worked as an instructor, evaluator and later as the program director. She worked with physically and mentally challenged adult clients and she continued to be a volunteer advocate for many of those clients following her retirement. Mrs. Greenwood retired in 1998 after 25 years of service. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Mount Airy from 1944 until her death. Mrs. Greenwood was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and a charter member of the Modern Gardner’s Garden Club. She was active in the PTA groups at her children’s schools throughout the years. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon & Joe Reid of Mount Airy; two sons and daughters in-law; Ron Greenwood and wife, Pam of Mount Airy, Michael Craig Greenwood and wife Nancy of Sacramento, California; three grandchildren, Alison Greenwood Dattoma and husband, Anthony of New York City, Ryan Greenwood and wife, Alexandra of Arlington, VA and Sara Elizabeth Greenwood of Boston, MA.; two great grandchildren, Cameron Brooke Dattoma of New York City and Jackson Keenan Greenwood of Arlington, VA.; a niece Shauna Yager and husband, Jim of Fresno, CA and a nephew, Dr. Gideon Dee Hill, III and partner Jack DiFeo of Philadelphia, PA; her sisters-in-law, Eleanor Powell-Hines and husband, Clarence, Estelle Belton and Joyce Greenwood and a host of other special nieces and nephews. In addition to her family, she had two special friends at Ridgecrest, Mrs. Zeo Stone and Mrs. Pauline Badgett. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Gideon Dee Hill, Jr. and wife Margaret; her daughter-in-law, Judi Kiser Greenwood; her brothers-in-law, Jack Greenwood, Pete Powell and Clarence Belton; and a nephew, Todd Greenwood. The “Celebration of her Life” will be conducted by the Rev. Mark Muckler at Central United Methodist Church in Mount Airy at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 and the family will receive friends following the service. Her body will lie in state in the sanctuary one hour prior to the service. A private burial will be held at Oakdale Cemetery. There will be a reception at Cross Creek Country Club immediately after the service to visit and reminisce with friends and family.
