Mrs. Sophia Lorraine Smith "Mink" Hawks, age 99, of Mt. Airy, widow of William Henry Hawks who started the First Church of the Brethren in Mt. Airy, passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2015, at her home. Mrs. Hawks was born in Surry County on August 23, 1915 to the late Grover Cleveland and Emma Parker Smith. Mrs. Hawks was retired from Balston Knitting and was a member of the First Church of the Brethren. Surviving are three daughters and son-in-law Loretta Mabe, Betty and Roy Shelton and Brenda Gaye Joyce all of Mt. Airy, nine grandchildren, several great grandchildren, several great great grandchildren, one sister and brother-in-law Tina and Maynard Easter of Mt. Airy and a daughter-in-law Nancy Tolbert of Mt. Airy. In addition to her husband and her parents Mrs. Hawks was preceded in death by a daughter Tiny Ethel Lawson and by a son Curtis Roger Hawks. Funeral services will be held Saturday April 25, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. at the Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy with services conducted by Mr. Mike Hiatt, Rev. Glen Sage, Bro. Johnny Hawks and Bro. Don Collins with burial to follow in the Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Saturday from 12:00 Noon until time for the service at Moody Funeral Home.
